Whereas for northern medical patients, travel is not discretionary — it is an essential prerequisite to receiving public health services; and Whereas across Northern Ontario, patients and families continue to face unavoidable barriers accessing healthcare that stem from the realities of required medical travel; and Whereas reimbursement levels do not fully reflect northern travel costs, administrative complexity in accessing the Northern Health Travel Grant, and the absence of formal mechanisms for ongoing patient input combine to create challenges that are felt across all of Northern Ontario; and Whereas medical travel under the Northern Health Travel Grant differs fundamentally; it is non-discretionary, frequently time sensitive, and often undertaken by patients who have limited ability to optimize routes, timing, accommodation, or meal costs due to health needs and appointment availability; Therefore, Be It Resolved That Council of the City of Kenora hereby authorize a letter of support and to participate in a coordinated advocacy effort alongside the All Nations Health Partners OHT and other northern partners to advance solutions to strengthen the Northern Health Travel Grant that reflect the diversity and strengths of northern and Indigenous communities.
